In 1964, Dusty Springfield had a top 10 hit song called Wishin’ and Hopin’.  This “man-chaser” song was ironically written by two men and sung by a gay woman. It is a fascinating insight into how women viewed getting a man in the culture of the early ’60s.   I don’t doubt for one moment that this recipe for how to win a man worked back then.  It would probably even work very well today, but I suspect many women would find it offensive.

However, underneath these lyrics lies the secret to true love for both sexes, in my experience.  You’ve got to show your partner something real that you care.  Many partners  in marriage lose that lovin’ feeling because they are hopin’ and wishin’ and thinkin’ and even prayin’ they’ll be loved.  But they’re not “doin’!”

The First Rule of Inner Peace speaks to this:  “First get neutral and then you will see clearly what you need to do.”   The emphasis is on “do.”  In married life, many couples feel hurt along the way so they get cautious with each other, creating a superficial relationship.  When you get centered, you get over past hurts. Then you’re ready for the wise advice in this song: “Just do it and after you do, you will be his (or hers).”

If you want real love, you gotta stick your neck out.  Now show the one you love you mean it this weekend!

Enjoy Dusty on Youtube below or read the lyrics underneath. It will make you smile…or cringe!

WISHIN AND HOPIN
Sung by Dustry Springfield. Written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach

Wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’
Plannin’ and dreaming each night of his charms
That won’t get you into his arms

So if you’re lookin’ to find love you can share
All you gotta do is
Hold him and kiss him and love him
And show him that you care

Show him that you care just for him
And do the things he likes to do
Wear your hair just for him, ’cause
You won’t get him
Thinkin’ and a-prayin’
Wishin’ and a-hopin’

Just wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’
Plannin’ and dreamin’ his kiss is the start
That won’t get you into his heart

So if you’re thinkin’ heartbreak
True love is
All you gotta do is
Hold him and kiss him and squeeze him and love him
Yeah, just do it and after you do, you will be his

(You gotta)
Show him that you care just for him
Do the things he likes to do
Wear your hair just for him, ’cause
You won’t get him
Thinkin’ and a-prayin’
Wishin’ and a-hopin’

Just wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’
Plannin’ and dreamin’ his kiss is the start
That won’t get you into his heart

So if you’re thinkin’ heartbreak
True love is
All you gotta do is
Hold him and kiss him and squeeze him and love him
Yeah, just do it and after you do, you will be his
You will be his
You will be his
